Bill seeks ethanol mandate

Democrats in the Legislature have introduced a bill that would require state vehicles to exclusively use ethanol-blended fuel.

Senate Minority Leader Jason Frerichs of Wilmot, one of 13 co-sponsors, said the bill would be an opportunity to support two of the state’s biggest industries.

“Agriculture is the No. 1 industry in our state, and more important, the ethanol industry is a rock-solid energy development here at home,” he said.

The full text of House Bill 1122 reads: “Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, any gasoline purchased in bulk by the state to be dispensed from state-operated fueling stations or fueling points for use in motor vehicles owned or leased by the state shall be an ethanol blend as defined in 10-47B-3 or unleaded gasoline that is to be blended with ethyl alcohol to produce ethanol blend.”
