State Auditors Track Funds That Went Awry for Jet Engines

Chairman’s Note: What does it take for Republican leadership in Pierre to simply follow the rules? Columnist Bob Mercer raises the question following a Legislative Audit uncovering nearly $1 million in aircraft expenses for the Governor’s office that were shifted to other departments to foot the bill in secret. It’s no wonder State Finance Commissioner Jason Dilges says “I don’t know that it was wrong.” This is the attitude of Ruling Class Republicans in Pierre. They just seem unable to figure out what’s ethical, appropriate, or responsible anymore. Mercer is right. South Dakota needs a Department of Legislative Audit to uncover state abuses. But it also needs two-party government to hold lawmakers accountable when state abuses occur.
