Sioux Falls, SD — Three Democratic lawmakers, Sen. Jamie Smith (District 15), Rep. Eric Emery (District 26A) and Rep. Kadyn Wittman (District 15), will be part of the Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force. All three bring unique perspectives to improve programs for people who are incarcerated.
We are glad Gov. Rhoden is following through on his commitment to the Joint Democratic Caucus to pursue a rehabilitation task force and work in good faith to invest in rehabilitation, support parolees, and improve resources meant to keep South Dakotans from going to prison in the first place.
"I am honored to be appointed to the Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force," said Rep. Emery. "This work is about more than building a new facility, it’s about making sure the people inside have real opportunities to change their lives. I look forward to addressing the issues that matter most, especially when it comes to rehabilitation, re-entry, and supporting programs that help our communities. Together, we can strengthen public safety while also giving our prisoners a fair chance at a better future."
"I’m honored to be appointed to the Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force," said Rep. Wittman. "I hope to carry with me the perspective I’ve gained as a regular volunteer at our current correctional facility, my work on this past summer’s re-entry study, and my role as chair of the State Corrections Commission. Expanding access to effective, evidence-based rehabilitation services is one of the most meaningful ways we can reduce recidivism and build safer, more resilient communities. I look forward to contributing to this important work with a thoughtful, compassionate lens and ensuring that the solutions we pursue reflect the dignity and potential of every person impacted by our correctional system."
"I am honored to have been chosen to be on the Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force," said Sen. Smith. "I look forward to working with leaders and stakeholders from across the state to find solutions to our high rates of recidivism and high rates of incarceration. We know we must do better and I believe we can."
